Bulgaria does not need a legislative amendment increasing the country's speed limit for highways to 140 km/h (87 m/h), according to Aleksi Stratiev, deputy chief of the Directorate General for Security Police.

Even though the speed limit may be increased for certain sections of the highways, road security authorities are firmly against the amendment, Stratiev told the Bulgarian National Radio.

The current legislation allows for the speed limit to be increased for certain sections and the amendment would be therefore unnecessary, the police official pointed out.

On Tuesday, it was announced that a legislative amendment prepared by the Bulgarian Regional Development Ministry envisaged the speed limit for highways to be increased from 130 km/h to 140 km/h.

Prime Minister Boyko Borisov endorsed the measure, saying: "Let's be honest – who is driving with 120 km/h on the highway?" Borisov added he had convinced Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov that 140 km/h is a decent speed for modern cars.
