Hundreds of relatives of expecting mothers and other patients who died because of doctor's mistakes and recklessness and people simply sympathetic to the cause are staging a protest rally Saturday.

The protests are going to be held under the motto "Stop Killing Mothers" and will be held in the capital Sofia, the cities of Shumen and Varna and the towns of Rakovski and Gotse Delchev.

The wave of protests comes on the heels of the latest tragic incident, involving a mother and her baby, which shocked Bulgaria.

Nadezhda Uzunova, 35, died Monday evening after coming to the Sofia maternity ward hospital "Sheinovo" several times and being sent back because the doctor on duty kept telling her she did not "yet have the required signs for being ready to give birth."

Nadezhda passed away just minutes after being admitted in the hospital, while the baby was placed on a respirator, but also died the next day.

Bulgaria's Health Minister, Stefan Konstantinov, stated Sheinovo was to be blamed for the tragic double death.

Konstantinov pointed out relatives, who insist the woman was sent back and forth, before being finally admitted in the hospital are right in their accusations. He also declared he will work to increase ten times fines for such fatal incidents.

On Thursday, the Executive Director of the maternity ward hospital Sheinovo in Bulgaria's capital Sofia, Dr. Ivan Kostov, resigned, admitting that the doctor who sent the mother back had been reckless and made a serious mistake.

The relatives of the woman inform that the autopsy results showed that the death was caused by incorrect intubation and delayed reactions of the doctors. The husband declared he will sue the hospital for murder. Nadezhda left behind a 2-year-old girl.

A total of three probes – from the Medical Audit, the Regional Health Inspectorate, and the Prosecutor's office, are taking place in the maternity ward over the tragic incident. They aim at establishing the exact circumstances in the case.

Earlier in November the Medical Audit Agency recommended in a report to fine Sheinovo over another fatal case. In September, Deyana, 19, died after fighting for her life for 42 days. She was released from the hospital without a diagnosis and all necessary tests.
