Bulgarian nationalist party Ataka has expelled its MEP Dimitar Stoyanov from the party, after reports Thrusday that Stoyanov has requested the resignation of leader Volen Siderov.

"Dimitar Stoyanov has tarnished and undermined the image of Ataka with his latest media statements," reads an announcement by the party Saturday.

In the declaration, Ataka representatives say that the request for resignation is "part of a plot to destroy patriotism in Bulgaria."

What is intriguing in the case is that the 28-year-old Stoyanov is a stepson to the leader Siderov, and a natural son to his wife Kapka Siderova.

Friday Stoyanov confirmed that he is calling for the resignation of Siderov, who ran as Ataka's candidate for presidential elections in Bulgaria end of October.

"My motives stem from the tragic results that the Ataka party got on the presidential and municipal elections," said he.

Siderov himself has retorted that he sees no worries in the requests and no grounds to step away.

He also retorted that the events are part of the plan of PM Boyko Borisov and Minister of Interior Tsvetan Tsvetanov to destroy Ataka to the benefit of their GERB party.

Wednesday Tsveta Georgieva became the 6th Ataka MP to leave the party's parliamentary group, leaving it to count 15 MPs.

Dimitar Stoyanov was elected MEP in the 2007 elections after Bulgaria joined the EU, and then again in the 2009 European Parliament elections.

He sat in the nationalist Identity, Tradition, Sovereignty group until its dissolution and is currently a non-attached MEP.
