Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
Outgoing President Georgi Parvanov has said that President-Elect Rosen Plevneliev has a good legacy left to him.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, he dwelled on the October presidential and local elections and on a number of present-day political and socio-economic issues.
Parvanov welcomed Plevneliev's vow to turn the presidency into "a strategic hub where the strategic vision for the country is established."
The outgoing head of state suggested that this was probably part of Plevneliev's plan to build upon what had already been achieved, which he interpreted as an expression of continuity.
Parvanov explained that his successor inherited, among other things, seven volumes of theses on the economy, two of them being strategic, three volumes of explanations about the work on Strategy 2020 another three volumes of accounts for the achievements, speeches and lectures for two tenures and 800 pages of chronicles of the activities of the President, the Vice President and the presidential institution.
The current head of state added that he hoped his successor would find the archives useful.
Commenting on the "2 in 1" vote held in end-October, he noted that the presidential debate preceding the elections had failed to take place and that the talks had often included marginal topics at the expense of a discussion on the presidential powers.
Parvanov said that he had accepted the results announced by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) and had congratulated the newly-elect President and Vice-President and mayors, regardless of which political formation they stood for.
He also remarked that he had many objections to the organization of the vote and reminded that he had been among the firm and vocal opponents to the spirit of the Election Code and had exercised his power of veto.
Unfortunately, his worries, as well as those of the political entities and society, had come true in the campaign, Parvanov explained, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA).
The President concluded by saying that at the October elections center-right ruling party GERB had deployed a technology which had been created by using the all too familiar tools from the past.
He also argued that the deliberate omissions in the Election Code had been used to instill a controlled and pre-programmed chaos.
