The October presidential and local elections gave another term in office to Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, and he can no longer find excuses in his predecessors.

The statement was made Monday by US Ambassador to Bulgaria, James Warlick, who spoke in an interview for the State-owned Bulgarian National Television, BNT, saying the government must now begin resolving issues and problems in the country.

The diplomat pointed out that despite the election victory of the ruling, center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party (GERB), many cast a ballot against them, thus those in power must get down to work and show that Bulgaria is progressing.

Warlick further advised the opposition to be constructive, pointing out that the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) demonstrated they have quite a few supporters, and should join in the effort for reforms.

"All in Bulgaria are sick and tired to hear talk about the same old problems," Warlick said.

The US Ambassador congratulated the winners in the race for president and vice-president, GERB's candidates – former Regional Minister, Rosen Plevneliev, and his running mate, former Justice Minister, Margarita Popova, but did not miss the BSP candidate, Ivaylo Kalfin – first runner-up, and independent, Meglena Kuneva, who ended third during the first round of the elections on October 23.

"These are good people; I highly respect them," he said.

Regarding the large number of reports about wide-spread violations and manipulations of the election process, Warlick said such practices could be noticed in elections all over the world, but stressed the issue is how the people behind them are probed and sanctioned.

"And each and every citizen has the responsibility to guarantee that elections are a representation of people's free will," the Ambassador concluded.
