Two women and a man that have been allegedly involved in vote buying in favor of Bulgaria's ruling centrist-right GERB party have been apprehended by police authorities in the southern Black Sea city of Burgas.
The criminal gang has been detained for 24 hours. The three have been supposedly active in the Black Sea resort town of Nessebar that has been notoriously connected with vote buying practices over the years due the abundance of "money making" opportunities it provides for mayors and municipal council members.
One of the women detained, Stanka Raykova, is included in GERB's list of nominations for Nessebar's minicipal council.
The investigation into the three vote buyers kicked off after a reporter from the Bulgarian National Television successfully registered as a citizen of Nessebar, even though he does not live there, and then "sold" his vote, secretly filming the whole process.
According to the site for investigative journalism bivol.bg, a total of 14 people have been involved in the vote buying scheme that took place on Sunday. A number of other signals have been reported about violations during Sunday's presidential and local elections across the country.
