Bulgaria's Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has finally announced the official results from Sunday's presidential election in the country.
CEC was bound to announce the official results within 48 hours of the end of the election day but the statutory deadline expired at 9 p.m. on 25 October.
There has been a delay on behalf of some sectional electoral commissions in the processing of electoral protocols, CEC spokesman Biser Troyanov has explained, as cited by dariknews.bg. The biggest delay has been registered in Sofia's municipal electoral commission.
A total of 1 349 380 people have voted for Rosen Plevneliev, candidate of the ruling centrist-right GERB, and his running mate, Margarita Popova. Ivaylo Kalfin, the presidential bidder endorsed by the left-wing Bulgarian Socialist party, and his running mate, Stefan Danailov, received 974 300 votes.
Bulgaria's former EU Commissioner Meglena Kuneva has gathered the support of 470 808 Bulgarians.
Plevneliev and Kalfin will face each other in the runoff scheduled for Sunday, October 30.
CEC's delay will shorten the time the two candidates will have available to carry out their election campaigns, Biser Troyanov has admitted.
