These Two Bulgarian Parties Opt Out of the October Elections
The Bulgarian "Green Movement" has announced it will not participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections on October 27, 2024
Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov has voted just minutes before the official 7pm closing of the voting day in Bulgaria's presidential and municipal elections Sunday.
Due to lines being formed in front of polling stations across the country, electoral authorities have extended voting until 8 pm EET.
Sunday Borisov was in Brussels for the European Council, and voted only on his return to Bulgaria, in his hometown of Bankya near Sofia.
Upon casting his vote, the Bulgarian PM gave a long apologetic speech on the virtues of his cabinet and center-right GERB party.
"I know Bulgarians have voted for the European development of their country," stated the PM, as the abbreviation GERB stands for Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria.
In Bulgaria however pro and contra election rhetoric is legally prohibited during the day of elections.
At the same time, PM Borisov insinuated that the matters discussed in Brussels, such as the imminent Schengen membership of Bulgaria in 2012, and financial stability in Europe, are much more important than elections in Bulgaria.
The Bulgarian PM nevertheless emphasized that he is very confident and happy about GERB's results on both votes, saying that occupying a good position in local authorities is a key goal of his party.
Borisov did not fail to remind to Bulgarian citizens and politicians about the possibility of early parliamentary elections.
"Everyone here knows that I've done everybody a great favor by not giving up power and paving the way for a long political instability in the country," said Borisov.
