Internet forums in Bulgaria are overflowing with congratulations for the Bulgarian players and coach in Italy's Trentino Diatec Trento after the team grabbed its third successive world title, a feat unique in volleyball's history.
"Congratulations for the Bulgarians in the team and most of all for Radostin Stoychev. Let him at the helm of the national team for ten years and the success won't be late. But if anybody is stirring tensions, his potential will never unfold here," a reader of local Dnevnik daily commented.
Trentino, which is led by Bulgarian Radostin Stoychev and includes two Bulgarian players, defeated in the final KS Jastrzebski Wegiel of Poland at Qatar's Women's Sports Committee Indoor Hall late on Friday.
The team recovered from a first set loss to clinch a 29-31, 25-16, 25-11, 25-16 victory.
In the bronze medal match, Zenit Kazan gained the podium spot following their win over Sesi Sao Paulo.
The fact that two-time defending champion Trentino Diatec won their third consecutive FIVB Men's Club World Championship is an unprecedented success.
Six Trentino Diatec players – Matey Kaziyski, Osmany Juantorena, Tsvetan Sokolov, Lukasz Sygadio, Andrea Bari and Raphael Vieira de Olivieira – have been a part of all three titles, while Jan Stokr, Massimo Colaci and Dore Delle Lunge were part of last year's championship as well.
"It was an incredible final," said Bulgarian Kaziyski, the captain for Trentino Diatec. "Both teams played on very high level. The first set was a little difficult for us, but we realised we were really close and that if we would push just a little more we would be able to win the match. And we did! We have participated in this championship for several years now, and we are looking forward to return next year."
The team claimed their second consecutive Men's Club World Championship crown at the end of last year after defeating Poland's PGE Skra Belchatow in the final in Doha.
Radostin Stoychev's team became the second in history to have won the world title twice, following the example of Misura Milano who did so back in 1990 and 1992, although Trentino's feat of back-to-back triumphs is unique in volleyball history.
