Independent presidential candidate and former EU Commissioner Meglena Kuneva has sent an open letter to Prime Minister Borisov, accusing him of trying to hide GERB's runner from publicity.

Thursday's letter informs that an election debate between Kuneva, socialist candidate Ivaylo Kalfin and the nominee of center-right ruling party GERB set for October 20 on bTV has been rescheduled for October 15.

According to sociologists, Bulgaria's first and former EU Commissioner, an allegedly non-partisan candidate backed by an initiative committee, Ivaylo Kalfin, the nominee of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and former Regional Development Minister and GERB runner Rosen Plevneliev are the top three contenders for the October 23 presidential race.

Kuneva insists that the date has been reset to five days earlier not because GERB wishes to close its campaign on October 20, as the party has said, but because GERB's election headquarters want the debate to take place as early as possible so that people can forget Plevneliev's unconvincing performance.

"I will participate in this debate on October 15 or any other date because it is the people who need it, not the candidates", Kuneva stated.

She believes that the rescheduling is part of a scheme under which Plevneliev avoids making public appearances while Prime Minister Borisov and Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov are propelling the election campaign.

"This is neither honest nor brave. After all, we are talking about is the future supreme commander of the armed forces. It is important that people be allowed to make an informed choice for a head of state", Kuneva stressed.

"Hiding the presidential candidate and replacing an honest debate with a flood of PR publications is undignified and non-democratic behavior. Let Mr Plevneliev set foot on the battlefield so that he can win his epaulets by himself," Kuneva urged Prime Minister Borisov.
