Seeking to shift focus away from the unrest sparked by the clashes in Katunitsa, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said Wednesday that road construction was his way of responding to tension-instigators.

"Every day I leave 30-40 km of new roads, kindergartens and water purification stations behind me", Borisov proudly declared in the southern Bulgarian city of Dimitrovgrad.

Prime Minister Borisov and Deputy Regional Development Minister Lilyana Pavlova opened Wednesday 22-plus kilometers of rehabilitated roads in the Haskovo and Kardzhali districts.

The rehabilitation project came in at around BGN 15 225 000 and was wrapped up in a year with financial support granted under the Regional Development Operational Program.

"To those seeking to stir tension I respond with roads", Borisov said, commenting on the murder of the 19-year-old Angel Petrov in the southern village of Katunitsa.

The boy was struck and killed by a mini-bus driver linked to the local Roma leader Kiril Rashkov.

The murder triggered waves of protests, rioting and acts of hooliganism across the country.

"We shall build up Bulgaria, if what they want is to tear it down. Anybody who has broken the law has been arrested and charges have been pressed against them. These events started 15 days ago", Borisov said, commenting on the arrest of the notorious "Tsar Kiro".

Borisov and Pavlova will open Thursday two rehabilitated road junctions spanning 9.2 km and 17.6 km.

The cost of the project totaled BGN 12 909 479 and was covered thanks to funding under the Regional Development Operational Program.
