Bulgaria: Investigation Reveals Political Affiliations in 26% of Vote-Buying Reports
In 26% of the reported cases of vote-buying, individuals affiliated with political parties have been implicated
The deadline for Bulgarians abroad to declare their preferred voting location outside Bulgaria for the upcoming presidential elections expires on Tuesday, September 27.
The written requests are automatically sent through the internet site to the respective Bulgarian diplomatic mission.
Embassies and Consular Offices are mandated to open a poll section if they receive 100 applications for the same location.
This is the initiative's third edition. It is not affiliated with any political party and it is supported by the Public Councils of Bulgarians Abroad and the Facebook group Voting without Borders.
The transmission of all personal data of the site's users is protected by an encoding certificate. Files with scanned signatures are not recorded and kept on the site. All other data is kept only until the voting polls are announced as proof of the number of submitted applications.
The other reason for keeping such record is the fact that there is a number of users, who often come back to finish the application and are prone to give up if they have to repeat the process of filling the data.
Social Security Numbers (Unified Civil Codes) and addresses are going to be deleted after the announcement of voting polls' locations at the beginning of October.
The "We Want to Vote" initiative has launched a new internet site aiming at assisting all Bulgarian expats, who wish to vote in the October 23 presidential elections.
The site, under the same name (Iskame da Glasuvame – We Want to Vote) is using a new technology for electronic signatures by the use of a web camera. (Directions can be found on the site at https://iskamedaglasuvame.com)
The Commission for Protection of Personal Data has fined Bulgaria's Foreign Affairs Ministry for making public nearly 37 000 permanent addresses in the country of Bulgarian voters residing abroad.
Bulgaria spared over BGN 8 M in state budget money by carrying out its local and presidential elections on the same date in 2011, the country's Finance Minister Simeon Djankov has stated.
Former Justice Minister Margarita Popova was nominated by the ruling centrist-right party GERB to run for Vice President of Bulgaria in the elections that took place on October 23 2011.
Rosen Plevneliev, former Bulgarian Regional Development Minister, was elected President on the ticket of the ruling, center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria part (GERB) on October 30 2011.
