Slovenia's center-left minority government was defeated in a confidence vote carried out in the country's Parliament Tuesday.

New elections will probably take place late this year or early in 2012, unless President Danilo Turk or the parliament nominate a new Prime Minister within seven days.

The fall of Prime Minister Borut Pahor's Social Democrats' minority government may force a postponement of a vote to back the legislation enhancing European Financial Stability Facility, Bloomberg has pointed out.

"The government will work to ensure enough support for the EFSF in a vote in parliament," Slovenia's Finance Ministry has said in a statement.

"A rejection of the key instrument for financial stability of the euro region would be counterproductive as it would limit the effectiveness of the EU fund and would negatively impact Slovenia's credibility in the international environment," the statement goes.
