Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
Ivaylo Kalfin, a presidential runner endorsed by the left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party, has expressed his worries over what he perceives as drastic budget cuts in the country's Foreign Ministry.
"Bulgaria's diplomacy cannot work with a budget like that," Kalfin, who is a former Foreign Minister (2005-2009), stated Monday.
He pointed out that Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry had just 1700 employees when he stepped out of office, the least number since 1990, and that a huge further downsizing followed as the new centrist-right GERB government took over.
On Monday, Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Sergey Stanishev also said he was worried by the Ministry's downsizing, according to Dnes.bg.
If elections were to be held now, the candidate of the left-wing oppositional party and current Member of the European Parliament, Ivaylo Kalfin, would be second after GERB's former Regional Development Minister Rosen Plevneliev.
