A total of 18 couples of bidders have sought registration for the Bulgarian presidential elections on October 23, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) announced as the registration deadline expired.

The 18 candidate couples represent 11 political parties, one political coalition, and 6 initiative committees, said Saturday night one of the CEC spokespersons Ralitsa Negetsova.

The deadline for submitting registration papers for the presidential elections expired at 5 pm on Saturday.

The Central Electoral Commission is now supposed to review the documents of each bidder for President and Vice President, and to rule on whether they meet the legal requirements to run.

As some of the candidates submitted their applications earlier, however, the CEC has already approved 14 candidate couples.

The last bidders to submit their papers on Saturday were marginal formations and initiative committees, including the Bulgarian Agrarian People's Union.
