Will Bulgaria Have a Stable Government After Yet Another Election in June? Our Readers Have Spoken
On our Facebook page, readers were asked about Bulgaria's stability after the June elections
Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has played his trump card by nominating for EU Commissioner and sending to Brussels Kristalina Georgieva, according to the current US Ambassador in Sofia.
"Georgieva was Borisov's ace in the hole. Borisov had been trying to lure the World Bank executive into his cabinet ever since he swept into power in July 2009, so Georgieva's decision to finally join the GERB team is a win for Brussels, Bulgaria, and Borisov himself," reads a diplomatic cable of the US Ambassador in Sofia James Warlick, as revealed by Wikileaks.
Ambassador Warlick stresses however that with Georgieva in Brussels, Borisov's trump card has been played.
"Now he has few (if any) additional cadre who are ready for the big time in case of needed future cabinet changes at home," the diplomat comments.
The document, entitled "Bulgaria's New European Commissioner Nominee" and dated January 21, 2010, points out that in her capacity of Vice President and Corporate Secretary of the World Bank Georgieva has been the first and only Bulgarian at such a senior position in the organization.
Bulgaria's Prime Minister Borisov named World Bank official Kristalina Georgieva in January to replace Rumiana Jeleva, who withdrew her candidacy for the post of EU commissioner for humanitarian aid after politicians accused her of incompetence and dubious business practices.
