Bulgaria played deplorably against England in the Euro 2012 qualifier in Sofia and deserved their 0:3 loss, according to former Bulgaria international and Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov.

The match, which almost completely killed the Bulgaira's chances to make to Euro 2012, was observed by Dimitar Berbatov at the Vasil Levski Stadium in Sofia Friday night. Berbatov used to be the captain of Bulgaria before he gave up on the national team in 2010.

"This is England. The loss is normal. Our boys exerted their efforts quite a bit but the English scored three beautiful goals. I think our boys did the best they could. But these are their technical capabilities at the moment," Berbatov told journalists late Friday night after the match.

The top scorer of the English Premiership for last season refused to analyze in detail the performance of the Bulgarian internationals but commended Bulgaria's German coach Lothar Matthaeus for trying to create a better organization in the team.

Berbatov also did not criticize the eight Bulgaria internationals who got into a drinking scandal last month after losing to Belarus in 1:0 in Minski, and breaking Matthaeus's curfew.

"I will never criticize the boys. If I have anything to say, I'll tell them. Let them have a beer. What do you think the English will do. These are human things. I have done that, too, and that didn't make me more or less of a player," the striker said, as cited by BGNES.

Berbatov was hardly optimistic about the future of the Bulgarian football, while at the same time insisting that there must be a desire for change. He said the team would perform even worse without its most experienced players – Aston Villa's midfielder Stiliyan Petrov and Bolton Wanderers' winger Martin Petrov.

"Stiliyan and Martin remained the most experienced and strongest ones so if they are not around, the situation will probably be much worse. Respect them, love them because they will be gone soon as well," he warned.

"Don't think about me. I have already accomplished what I had to. Think about the young ones. Even if I end my career tomorrow, there will be a smile on my face," Berbatov declared with respect to his own future.

With one year left on his contract, the striker still has not been offered an extension by United, with the summer months seeing a tremendous amounts of international press reports that he was about to be sold to one from among a number of teams across Europe – which ultimately failed to materialize.
