Bulgaria's top female tennis hopeful, Tsvetana Pironkova, is through to the second round at the US Open Grand Slam tournament after easing past France's Virginie Razzano 6-2 6-3 in one hour and 19 minutes.

Pironkova is now to face China's Shuai Peng, who also had a comfortable win over American Varvara Lepchenko 6-3 6-4 in her first round. Shuai Peng is currently ranked No. 14 on the singles ranking, while the Bulgarian is 51st.

Bulgaria's top male player, young prospect Grigor Dimitrov, did not succeed in upsetting Gael Monfils. The seventh-seeded Frenchman defeated him 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-4 in Monday's opening game.

The Bulgarian is yet to win against any Top 10 player. His win-loss score is 0-5 after losses to Rafael Nadal, Gilles Simon (twice), David Ferrer and now Gael Monfils.
