Bulgaria: 'Tribal Men' Flock from Sirte to Tripoli to Fight for Gaddafi - Report A TV grab from the BBC on 23 Aug shows a rebel fighter on the giant sculpture of a golden clenched fist crushing a US warplane, inside the Gaddafi compound. It commemorates a 1986 US air attack on Tripoli.

Fresh reinforcements of men from the tribal regions around Sirte, the bastion of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, have headed to fight the rebels in Tripoli, the last functioning pro-Gaddafi TV station reported.

Gaddafi supporters are continuing to make their way to Tripoli to fight the rebels, pro-Gaddafi Al-Urubah TV reported after the rebels took over Gaddafi's compound in the capital, according to BBC Monitoring reports.

Al-Urubah has described the reinforcements as "men of the Sirte tribes" - a reference to Col Gaddafi's birthplace, the town of Sirte. Its report has not been confirmed but the region around Sirte remains a stronghold of Gaddafi.

Pockets of fighting are still being reported withing the Bab al-Aziziya compound, even after the rebels stormed it successfully early Tuesday night. Gaddafi's whereabouts remain unknown.

Meanwhile, even though the compound has not been fully secured, the news about its capture by the rebels led to street celebrations in the rebel capital Benghazi in the east. However, rebels at the compound have planted their flag climbing on the giant sculpture of a golden clenched fist crushing a US warplane, inside the Gaddafi compound. It commemorates a 1986 US air attack on Tripoli.

Rebel spokesman Guma el-Gamaty told the BBC that the images of rebels in the Gaddafi compound, climbing on the golden fist, were hugely symbolic for opponents of the Libyan leader.

Libyan UN envoy Ibrahim Dabbashi is cited as predicting that Libya will be "liberated" from the Gaddafi dictatorship within 72 hours.
