Doctor Zdravko Georgiev, a Bulgarian medic formerly jailed in Libya, has said that if Bulgaria is a real country it must take steps to make sure that he and the five nurses are ultimately acquitted.

Georgiev, together with five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor were arrested in 1999 and were accused of deliberately infecting more than 400 children with HIV in a Libyan hospital in Benghazi.

They were sentenced to death twice. In July 2007, the involvement of the French Sarkozy Presidential couple in the final stages of the talks, which has been deemed crucial by Bulgaria and the medics, led to their release after spending a total of 2755 days in a Libyan prison.

Approached Tuesday to comment on the situation in Libya, Doctor Georgiev told journalists that he was only partially satisfied with the fact that the dictator had been struggling for his survival over the past few days.

He further made it clear that he would not initiate court proceedings to prove his innocence if he had to do this all by himself.

"I am tired of going to courts. I am happy that I am free and I am healthy", Georgiev declared.

He also said that he would gladly testify against Muammar Gaddafi if he stood trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague.
