The Novel Idea of Promoting Proper Bulgarian Language by Legal Sanctions: The Novel Idea of Promoting Proper Bulgarian Language by Legal Sanctions

A new Bill for the Use of Bulgarian Language has been tabled in Bulgaria recently, aiming at having a special council with the cabinet to monitor and enforce the purity of literary language and the rules for grammar, spelling and inclusion of foreign words.

The Bill outlines the directives for mandatory use of literary language and the fines to be imposed on violators. It further bans the use of foreign language and even dialects of Bulgarian at public events.

The only valid thing here is the fact literary Bulgarian language is in bad shape; it is almost extinct to be honest. On the other hand-side, a language is an always developing system.

However, making someone use proper Bulgarian by sanctions is indeed a uniquely ludicrous idea. Orders, directives and fines are not the cure.

How about better school curriculum and books; better funding; better trained and paid teachers; setting examples in mass media of people with real contributions to Bulgarian language and culture; promoting Bulgarian classics, plays, music instead of chalga (pop folk) divas, model starlets, football players' and their wives? Sadly the list of the latter does not stop here...

And if and when this idea becomes reality, the first fines should be handed to some of the known violators - those same Members of the Parliament who will pass yet another senseless law, with the majority of them having no idea what proper Bulgarian is.

Again, Bulgaria has plenty of laws, including some good ones, and they still are not reinforced. Who then would reinforce a truly dumb one?
