A tank, carrying 20 tons of sodium bicarbonate, overturned Friday morning on Trakiya highway, about 149 km for the capital Sofia.
According to the initial police report, the tank overturned after the hitch connecting it to a truck with Romanian license plates broke. The chemical spilled on the road. A Honda automobile, moving behind the truck, failed to stop and hit the tank. The driver and the two passengers are all young men between the ages of 20 and 26.
Three people have been injured – the driver of the tank, who is a Romanian citizen, and two people from the Honda. They have all been listed in the hospital in the second largest city of Plovdiv. Their injuries are not life-threatening.
The highway in the area of the accident, including the shoulder, has been completely closed for traffic, causing a huge traffic jam. Teams have been deployed to clean the road from the spill.
