Bulgaria: Murky Bulgarian Media Empire Swallows Another Top Daily - Report

Delyan Peevski, Bulgarian MP from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms and part of New Bulgarian Media Group owned by his mother Irena Kraseva, has allegedly acquired the top Bulgarian daily Standart.

Recently the Capital weekly reported that Standart owner, Todor Batkov, had shed 34.5% of the shares in the paper to a company called GM Press.

Wednessay the Cross Information Agency reports that the ownership of the wide circulation daily has been transferred to Peevski and Tsvetan Vasilev, chair of the Corporate Commercial Bank, also related to Krasteva's New Bulgarian Media Group.

New Bulgarian Media Group owns the national BBT TV channel, the Telegraf daily, Weekend weekly, Monitor daily, Politika weekly, the newly-created Vseki Den daily, as well as the local Veliko Tarnovo daily Borba and the Plovdiv daily Maritsa.

The Telegraf and Weekend are the highest-circulation daily and weekly in Bulgaria.

Apart from the concentration of media in its hands, the New Bulgarian Media Group has been criticised for an apparent lack of clarity as to the provenance of its assets.

Commentators have linked both the Group and the Corporate Bank to the ethnic Turkish-dominated, liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Bulgaria's third-largest party in terms of support.
