Bulgaria's football legend, Hristo Stoichkov, is officially supporting the nomination of Sofia as European Culture Capital 2019.
Stoichkov is voicing his support in a letter sent Wednesday to the Sofia City Hall.
The former star striker is also in the initiative committee for making Sofia a candidate for the title.
"Becoming the 2019 European Culture Capital is a competition requiring lots of strength, effort, excellent preparation and a partnership game. The city is one of the three oldest European capitals and has the potential and the possibility to show before entire Europe its rich architecture and cultural heritage," the letter reads.
With this move Stoichkov actually favored the Bulgarian capital over his native city of Plovdiv, which is also in the race and regardless of the fact he is currently in Plovdiv with Spanish investors over projects for new sports facilities in the country's second largest city.
