People are afraid to run in local elections in the fall over police brutality, according to the leader of the right-wing Union of Democratic Forces, UDF, Martin Dimitrov.

In a Sunday interview for the Bulgarian National Radio, BNR, Dimitrov said that UDF had very serious candidates in several regional centers, but they were scared to be nominated over the possibility their small and medium-size businesses could be destroyed by police terror.

"People ask me: Martin, can you provide me safety from police methods and I cannot vow such guarantees. I tell them that it is their own responsibility to step up and lead the battle. But there has never before been such fear," the right wing leader stressed.

Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, is the head of the election campaign and headquarters of his ruling Citizens of European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, party, ahead of the next week no-confidence vote submitted in the Parliament by the opposition on the grounds of failures in the security and home affairs sector and the delayed joining of the Schengen zone.

Dimitrov was, however, adamant a rapprochement with the Socialists is impossible after statements from the leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, and former Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, all political forces in Bulgaria must unite in order to topple GERB.
