Bulgaria's Borisov Cabinet represents a power-greedy grouping that aims at establishing a dictatorship, Socialist Party leader and ex PM Sergey Stanishev has told a party congress.

"They are hiding their true intentions and are trying all sorts of legislative ideas in order to speed up the imposing of the already lurking dictatorship," Stanishev said about the Bulgarian government of PM Boyko Borisov and his center-right party GERB.

In his long report to Saturday's 15th meeting of the 47th congress of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, Stanishev defended much of the legacy of the communist period in Bulgaria (1944/48-1989).

"We are not proud of the restriction of rights and persecution of those thinking differently but we cannot let them slander the name of our party and the achievements of this period," he declared.

Stanishev believes that the "power-hungry" Borisov government and the "grouping" backing it is ready to use all means in order to wrest a victory in the upcoming local and presidential elections, including "propaganda channels for vote buying, manipulations, threats, spying, and persecution."

He has urged the Socialists to consolidate in order to put up a fight against the forces of the ruling party. He further emphasized the importance of both the local and presidential elections scheduled for October 23, praising the role of outgoing Socialist President Georgi Parvanov, who is completing his second term.

"Our presidential candidate Ivaylo Kalfin has proven that he will not affect the Bulgarian welfare state, that he does not serve foreign wills, and defends Bulgaria's national interests," Stanishev stated about Kalfin, who was the foreign minister in his government in 2005-2009.

"There is a new political situation in the country. The GERB leaders placed their own party in isolation; they imposed an autocratic way of government, and rely on the support of the xenophobic party Ataka. GERB has no political face because it is omnivorous. GERB, however, are very good at using all official and unofficial mechanisms for power, which makes them a very dangerous opponent," the Socialist leader told his party.

In his speech, Stanishev even reached out to the "traditional right", the rightist parties descended from the old Union of Democratic Forces, the emblematic anti-communist party from the 1990s, urging to help "defend Bulgaria's democracy" from GERB.

"Bulgaria has no chance of getting out of the abyss if the democratic parties fight each one for itself. We need to think for the national salvation," he said.

Bulgaria's "traditional right"in the face of the so called Blue Coalition has already made it clear, for the first time, that it will support the no confidence motion of the Socialists and the ethnic Turkish centrist party DPS (Movement for Rights and Freedoms). The vote, which does not present any danger for the survival of the Borisov government, is to be held in the upcoming days.
