A number of people remain trapped in the government complex buildings in downtown Oslo after they were damaged by a bomb attack Friday afternoon.
"There are people trapped in the buildings. Hundreds of people could have been in the buildings when the explosions occurred," Hans Kristian Amundsen, a Norwegian government minister, said on the BBC.
He talked almost two hours after the blasts occurred at about 3:30 pm CET.
Amundsen has declared that the Norwegian authorities are focusing on the rescue of the people in the area of the explosion, rather than on who the perpetrators are.
"It is impossible for us to speculate at any direction. We have to focus on the rescue of people... We can't speculate about the nature of the bomb at this stage," the Norwegian government minister said.
The blasts that rattled the Norwegian government complex in downtown Oslo have been caused by a bomb, according to Norway's police.
At least two persons are reported to have been killed, eight others are reported to have been injured, according to Norway's national broadcaster NRK, cited by the BBC. Seven people have been received at the Oslo University Hospital with injuries after the explosion.
NRK also reported that the police authorities have confirmed that the explosions were caused by a bomb attack.
It is still unclear who is behind the attack in Olso, and if it is the case of terrorism with local or international grievances. Guesses range from local causes to Norway's participation in the NATO-led ISAF mission in Afghanistan and in the NATO-led air strikes against the regime of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
Norwegian news agency NTB has announced that Norway's Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg is safe. According to local media reports, the blasts were directed against the VG, whose office is in the same building.
