Hacker's Prank Puts Romania, Albania at Loggerheads

A prank played by a Serbian hacker caused diplomatic tension between Albania and Romania.

It all started when an Italian online news agency claimed Romanian President Triaan Basescu had explained that Romania does not want to recognize Kosovo's independence, because Albanians are "dirty gypsies" and "trash".

The information was said to have been taken from Albanian and Kosovo news sources, but it subsequently turned out the "news" had been written by a Serbian hacker who infiltrated the agency's website, the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency said Wednesday.

The Romanian Ambassador in Tirana was summoned by the Albanian Foreign Ministry Tuesday to explain his country's position towards Albanians. Romania was quick to retaliate, pointing out an Ambassador should not be asked to explain unverified information.
