Bulgaria: DPS Nominates Elena Yoncheva for MEP
The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) in Blagoevgrad has nominated Elena Yoncheva as a candidate for the European Parliament, sparking intense debate and speculation
Bulgarian MEP Antoniya Parvanova does not intend to participate in the presidential elections in October 2011.
"I would like to officially announce that I do not plan to run for president at this stage", Parvanova said Thursday.
The liberal MEP drew significant media attention after calling for a temporary suspension of the ground handling services at Sofia Airport on July 05.
Parvanova's spate of media appearances on the topic of luggage mafia operating at Sofia Airport gave rise to speculations that the campaign may be part of the presentation of her presidential bid.
To illustrate her point, the MEP cited numerous complaints she had received involving unauthorized interference with passengers' luggage or even stolen personal belongings.
In a fiercely critical letter, she called on Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov to step in and end the activities of the "organized crime group" operating on Sofia Airport.
Representatives of the Bulgarian Ministry of Transport qualified Parvanova's accusations as "unpatriotic".
