Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov has complained that the Foreign Ministry has failed to suggest new candidates for diplomatic posts, which he attributed to a shortage of diplomatic cadres.
"At present, requests have been filed for the recall of Ambassadors on grounds that I personally do not accept", Parvanov explained, refuting the idea that proven links of members of Bulgaria's diplomatic corps to the communist-era security services damage the country's reputation.
"If a proposal for replacing a diplomat due to the expiration of their term in office arrives, I am ready to instantly engage in dialogue. Another problem is that I do not really see a flock of applications storming in", the President commented.
He recommended allocating bigger financial resources for Bulgaria's defense sector, as was the case at the time of the country's accession to NATO, and cautioned against discarding the submarine forces unit of the Bulgarian Navy, which he said would create a vacuum in staff training against a backdrop of new challenges in the Black Sea region.
