Bulgaria: Brown Bear Spotted at Alpine Altitude in Bulgaria A still of the video showing a brown bear galloping on the cirque scree below the Mussala peak in Bulgaria. The bear can be seen as a dark spot on the upper right corner of the central snow patch.

A brown bear has been spotted last week running on the steep scree just below Bulgaria's highest peak Mussala in the Rila mountains, some 2,900 m above sea level.

This is an unusual incident for the behavior of Bulgarian brown bears, which tend to prefer dense and secluded forests below 2,000 m.

The bear was seen by the weatherman on duty at the Mussala station of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, Bulgaria's weather service, and by a member of the Mountain Rescue Service (PSS) on their way to work on the peak.

According to their account, the bear appeared from the arete of the cirque, noticed them and hastened over the moraine to run away.

The two filmed part of the bear's route along the steep border of the Mussala cirque; you can watch the video HERE.
