The opposition in Yemen declared Sunday they will apply all possible effort to stop President Ali Abdullah Saleh from returning to the country.

Saleh left left for Saudi Arabia Saturday to be treated for injuries he received in an attack on his presidential compound a day earlier.

Meanwhile, BBC reports that thousands of people in Yemen are celebrating the President's departure in the capital, Sanaa's University Square and on nearby the streets chanting and waving flags all while the unrest continues with explosions and gunfights.

There is also renewed fighting between Yemeni military and fighters of President Saleh's rival Ahmar tribe in Taiz in the south.

Yemen's acting President - previously Vice President who under the constitution replaces Saleh in his absence - Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, has taken over the country and the command of the armed forces and security services.

Saleh left with 35 members of the family, including his wife. He is accompanied also by the prime minister and the speaker of the Yemeni parliament. His son, Ahmad, commander of the elite Republican Guard, and his nephews, Ammar and Yehia, who military commanders, are reported to still be in the country.

The President broadcast an audio message on Friday after he was wounded, blaming the attack on an "outlaw gang" of his tribal enemies.

More than 160 people have been killed in the fighting in Sanaa since May 23 ans 350 since January.

The prominent Ahmar family is said to have been financing the opposition and helping sustain protesters.

Western and regional powers have been urging Saleh, who has ruled the country for 33 years, to sign an agreement, prepared by the Gulf Cooperation Council that would see him hand over power to his deputy in return for an amnesty from prosecution.

He has agreed to sign on several occasions, but then backed out.
