The presidential bid of Bulgaria's former and first EU Commissioner, Meglena Kuneva, is good, sound and serious, according to the leader of the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, and former Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev.

Stanishev spoke Saturday before journalists, saying this nomination did not come as surprise, but reiterated, at this stage, there is no way the Socialists would support it.

"BSP cannot turn into an organization, securing the success of a certain individual. Each candidate, nominated by us, or supported by us, must have clear commitments to their future policies when in office, their functions and the content of these functions, along with an active participation in local election against the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, party and firmly on our side," Stanishev declared.

The socialist leader further stated the GERB cabinet is damaging and detrimental, reminding the vows of the now-rulers to make Bulgaria an average European country.

"And where are we now? We all see things are going in the opposite direction – Bulgaria lags behind more and more, we have a monocracy, a regime oppressing everyone who dares to disagree," he said.

Stanishev informed that the next round of consultations with the other major opposition party – the ethnic Turkish Movement for Right and Freedoms, DPS, over the no-confidence vote against the cabinet is scheduled for Wednesday. He explained he was ready to also approach the right-wing Blue Coalition and discuss the matter with them.

The BSP leader pointed out the vote could be aimed personally at PM, Boyko Borisov, over him bearing full responsibility for the failures of the cabinet.
