Bulgaria: Bulgarian EU Commissioner Urges Reduction of Harmful Building Emissions Bulgarian EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva discusses important environmental issues with students in Sofia. BGNES.

Bulgarian EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva highlighted the importance of reducing harmful emissions from buildings during a lecture in Sofia titled "Learning to live amid a changing climate".

"We as consumers contribute the most to climate change through the buildings we live in. The biggest amount of harmful emissions is generated by buildings", announced Commissioner Georgieva.

"Climate change must be slowed down, because it is already too late to stop it. We must be very well acquainted with our economy and our way of living so as to be able to draft a plan for our contribution to the fight against climate change", Georgieva said, urging more decisive action to counter the grave environmental threat.

The EU Commissioner explained that the most important step that can be taken in this direction is building insulation. She pointed out that home energy retrofits in times of crisis create construction jobs.

"Everything that is being built at the moment must be built to resist temperatures higher by several degrees. No one can afford to treat the issue trivially", Georgieva added.

She emphasized that the health care system must also be prepared to handle climate change.
