Bulgaria's Right Demands Ban on Rallies near Religious Temples

Bulgaria's rightist opposition Blue Coalition will initiate legislative changes banning the demonstrations near religious temples because of Friday's incident between nationalists and Muslims in Sofia.

The incident on Friday, in which the nationalist Ataka party assaulted praying Muslims in the Banya Bashi mosque, shocked Bulgaria. The Ataka party staged a protest against the loudspeakers of the mosque during the Friday prayer.

Proshko Proshkov from the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria party, one of the two major members of the Blue Coalition, reminded that the law for demonstrations currently restricts rallies near the Parliament, the Presidency, the Council of Ministers, and military bases. The rightists believe it should ban demonstrations near religious temples during the time they hold services.

According to the DSB party, Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov must be held accountable for failing to prevent the xenophobic outburst.

"With his inaction he is turning Bulgaria in a Third-World country allowing such accidents," said Proshkov, who is his party's candidate for Sofia Mayor in the elections in the fall, and is currently the mayor of the Lozenets district.

"There were indications about Ataka's hit two weeks ago but those remained unnoticed by the respective authorities," Proshkov said, predicting that the attack on the Muslims might trigger a wave of terrorism in Sofia.

He urged the Prosecutor's Office to investigate the actions of Ataka leader Volen Siderov, and called upon the other district mayors in Sofia not to allow Ataka to stage rallies.

Proshkov revealed that two weeks ago the nationalist party Ataka asked if him they could locate campaign tents in his district but he refused based on legal provisions allowing district mayors to ban events they deem a threat to the public safety.
