A bicycle march will take place in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia Friday to mark the international Bike to Work Day.

During this year's edition of the traditional march, the cyclists will try to set a record for a number of bikes that can be fitted in 16 parking lots.

The march will start at 18:00 in front of the St Alexander Nevski cathedral and will continue along the Rakovski, Patriarch Evtimiy, Fridtjof Nansen, Evlogi Georgiev boulevards, terminating at the Soviet Army monument, where a concert will be held.

All streets along this route will be closed to ensure the safety of the participants, say the organizers from the Bulgarian youth association Velo-Revolution.

The initiative aims to promote biking, to draw attention to the bicycle infrastructure and to urge drivers to be more tolerant of cyclists.

This will be the fourteenth bike march organized by Velo-evolution, a Bulgarian organization devoted to popularizing commuting by bicycle.

In recent years, Sofia has been battling steadily aggravating traffic problems. At the same time, the city has hardly any infrastructure for bike-riding and cyclists face many obstacles and even dangers.

Current Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov has repeatedly claimed the designation of special bicycle lanes as an achievement of his term as Sofia Mayor (2005-2009).
