The leader of the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, and former, Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, hinted for the first time Saturday, he might run for president in the fall.
Stanishev spoke to reporters commenting on recent statements of current PM, Boyko Borisov, who says every leader of a political party must enter the race.
The BSP leader, however, pointed out he is ready to do so only if the Borisov's ruling, center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, party, makes the necessary constitutional amendments in the requirements for the candidates.
The ex PM stressed that in 1991, when the Constitution was passed, the text about the requirements for candidates had been written with two goals – to stop the ex King, Simeon Saxe-Coburg and the ex PM, Andrey Lukanov, from eventually becoming Heads of State, most likely talking about the ban on people with double citizenship to run for president.
According to the BSP leader, "to have the executive power and to abdicate from it in the president's office, which has way more limited functions, is to run away from responsibility."
