Flu Epidemic Surges Across Bulgaria; Pazardzhik Declares Emergency
The influenza outbreak is on the rise in Bulgaria, with a significant impact on children and individuals under 30
The latest court hearing of the prolonged double-murder case of the Belneyski sisters was postponed Friday over the non-attendance of two witnesses.
Vladimir Slavov-Iskirkovetsa, who had previously testified that defendant Lazar Kolev had admitted being guilty of the crime, failed to appear in court, for which he was penalized with a fine of BGN 200.
Prisoner Anton Stefanov, who was also summoned as witness, was also missing. His absence was explained with a surgical intervention he had undergone on May 04.
Dimitriya Gancheva, the prosecutor in charge of the case, insisted that the two witnesses serving prison sentences, Anton Stefanov and Rumen Duparinski, be questioned together, which is why the next court session was scheduled for May 16.
Marin Markovski, lawyer of Lazar Kolev, insisted that the attending witness should be summonned to testify, voicing fears that Duparinski may be subjected to psychological harassment and questioning.
"The witnesses' statements, among other things, may reverse the development of the trial. You will hear important things in proof of Lazar Kolev's innocence", Markovski declared as he left the building of the District Court in Pazardzhik.
He also informed that the fingernail clippings of the two sisters had been properly packed and would be admitted as evidence in the trial.
At the 16 May court session, a live conference call is to be held with the experts from Innsbruck, Austria, who have worked on the DNA analysis. Apart from that, there will be a second hearing of Ivan Ivanov from the Bulgarian National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science who has carried out the DNA experts analyses.
