The ruling, center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB party, favors October 23 as the date of the upcoming presidential and local elections.
The proposal had been submitted in the Parliament Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Bulgarian Constitution, the Parliament schedules the presidential elections while local and general ones are within the authority of the President, which could bring the decision about the fall elections to a deadlock since GERB and the Head of State often disagree.
According to the new Election Code, recently passed by GERB, the President is to propose a local elections date 90 days before they are to be held while the Parliament must do so for the presidential elections 75 days prior, meaning GERB must wait for Georgi Parvanov to say his favorite date.
GERB, the right-wing Blue Coalition and the nationalist, far-right Ataka have chosen October 23, the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, wants October 30, while the other major opposition formation – the Bulgarian Socialist Paryt, BSP, favors November 11, but the latter say they are willing to compromise.
