US President Barack Obama plans to name CIA Director Leon Panetta Defense Secretary succeeding Robert Gates, according to Obama administration officials.

Gen. David Petraeus, now running the war in Afghanistan is expected to take his place as chief of the Central Intelligence Agency.

The reshuffle is expected to take effect this summer. Defense Secretary Robert Gates already has said he will leave in 2011.

The changes are expected to be announced Thursday at the White House; the sources who announced them wished to remain anonymous.
