The US has accepted NATO's request to extend their participation in the military operation in Libya by 48 hours.

The news was reported Monday by the TV channel bTV, citing Pentagon officials.

The change of the American position comes one day after it was announced the US military aircraft and ships would be on stand-by and the command of the Operation Odyssey Dawn would be shifted to NATO and European allies.

The Pentagon says in a statement the US count NATO and Europe will be able to topple down the regime of dictator Muamar Gaddafi in Tripoli.

Gaddafi still has control over many parts of Libya despite reports many of his closest circle are defecting and that his envoys are secretly negotiating with western powers.

The Libyan authorities warn of a human disaster if bombings damage the project known as "Artificial River," providing water for the majority of Libyans.
