The Bulgarian Defense Ministry in the last few months shows an alarming trend of underestimating threats to national security, according to President, Georgi Parvanov.

The opinion was posted Saturday on the President's profile in Facebook, saying the defense of the country and a strong army are not among the cabinet's priorities.

Parvanov, who is also Bulgaria's Commander in Chief, points out the contemporary views about the high dynamics and the difficulty in predicting risks for national security lack in the government's policies.

"The defense resource in the last two years outlines a high risk for our national security, the security of our territory and population, of every single citizen. The Defense Ministry budget for 2011 and for the next year is under the minimum threshold we need," the President writes on Facebook.

According to Parvanov, the fact a long-term investment plan has not yet been adopted is distorting the reform and is dooming it to the repeat of previous mistakes.

The President voices opposition to the latest amendments to the Defense Act, giving the Defense Minister the right to send up to 600 armed servicemen on missions, compared to the previous 200 unarmed forces, saying this undermines the Parliament and gives too much authority to the Minister.
