The construction of the much-awaited Sofia waste treatment plant is going to be delayed even further over pending approval from the European Commission and the selection of contractors.

The statement was made Tuesday by the Sofia Deputy Mayor for Ecology Maria Boyadzhiyska, cited by the Bulgarian news agency BTA. The Deputy Mayor says there is a new 2.5-year deadline for the plant, not 2 years. The ground breaking date remains unknown and has already been delayed by a year and a half.

The public procurement order for one of the installations - for green and food waste compost, had been terminated over a year after it was announced because there has been just one bidder offering a price exceeding the BGN 40 M slated for it. This means the City Hall must start a new procedure which is impeding the construction despite the fact the EC already approved the financing of this component of the plant.

The contractor for the landfill has not been selected either. This financing has been approved by Brussels as well, but the EC has requested additional information if the landfill can take household waste after the current one in Suhodol is closed and what are other landfills in proximity that can take Sofia's waste.

The EC is yet to make a decision on the financing of the main component – the waste treatment plant. Several months ago, Brussels stated there is a need of a new study to see if it can be build for less money than the already contracted BGN 209 M with the consortium between the Bulgarian company Stanilov and the German Heilit. This study has been finished and already forwarded to the EC.

Meanwhile, the amount of waste deposited at the Suhodol landfill is down by 33% over recycling being introduced in Sofia and reduced consumption, according to the Deputy Mayor.
