The Federation of European Film Directors (FERA) has sent a letter to Bulgarian Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, voicing strong alarm about the cabinet's intentions to ignore the agreements reached with filmmakers in December, 2010.
The letter is signed by FERA President, famous Hungarian film director, Istvan Szabo, the Bulgarian news agency, BGNES, informs.
"The agreements have been remarkable with the effort to establish a new national strategy to finance Bulgarian movie-making in the light of the best EU practices and with the inclusion of the local film community in the preparation and the execution of this strategy. This would guarantee that a certain number of Bulgarian features would be produced every year and the creation of wonderful films," the letter reads.
Szabo further points out the latest Bulgarian-made movies have been impressive, triggering strong interest of the EU film industry, which must be a source of pride for the cabinet and all Bulgarians. "It is a real pity to revoke consideration for all this so quickly," he adds.
The letter explains that FERA represents film directors from all 27 EU Member States and all face economic hardships similar to those in Bulgaria. "The best solution is the one that can keep and maintain adequate level of financing of filmmaking until better times," the Hungarian film director stresses.
"We appeal to you, Mr. Prime Minister, to order a change of policy; to adhere to the Film Industry Act, which is of crucial importance for the Bulgarian film, and to keep the formula of its stable financing of the modest minimum of at least 7 motion pictures a year. Otherwise, the recent Renaissance of Bulgarian cinema, which contributed greatly to the positive image of your country, can be easily destroyed and then very difficult to resurrect," Szabo concludes.
