Bulgaria's President, Georgi Parvanov, has sent a letter of condolence to Japanese Emperor Akihito, regarding the most destructive ever earthquake to hit Japan.

The 8.9 magnitude on the Richter scale shock has caused human fatalities, injuries and vast material damage.

"In connection with this tragic incident that brought pain and sorrow to many, please extend to the families and relatives of the victims and the injured our sincere sympathy and condolences," the letter reads.

The Bulgarian President further voices hope in the name of Bulgarian people and himself personally for the speedy and successful recovery of the country and its citizens.

Latest reports from Japan inform that a ship with 100 people on board has been swept by the tsunami in the aftermath of the earthquake. The ship's whereabouts remain unknown.
