I would love to see at least part of the young people living abroad return to their homeland, said Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov at a meeting with Bulgarian students during his 2-day visit to Austria.
"I hope that when there are good conditions, they will reconsider. We would be very happy if these young people who have a language proficiency, culture, and contacts, are among the employees of the investors that are already working or will come to work in Bulgaria," Parvanov said.
At the meeting at the Bulgarian Culture Institute "Haus Wittgenstein" in Vienna, he pointed out that Bulgaria offers a tax system that is most favorable to foreign investments in all Europe.
The president also said that he welcomes what the government is doing in the infrastructure, especially the highways, but noted that the situation with the village roads is "dramatic".
However, he said that the country cannot develop cultural tourism if it can provide only highways.
"Bulgaria has a lot to show from its cultural and historical heritage, but it cannot do it if it does not have a good infrastructure," he said.
The president also defended the work of the government in the social sector.
"Do not expect from me to say that the government is wrong and it should take out money and give it to pensioners. There will be larger pensions when there are more working people in Bulgaria and when we produce more because this is not happening at the moment," Parvanov said.
He pointed out that he never supported the idea of stripping Bulgarians living abroad from their right to vote. In his opinion, this is one of the few remaining threads that keep them connected to Bulgaria.
At present, there are about 4000-5000 Bulgarian students in Austria.
