The Bulgarian government will prepare a special recovery program for its poorest regionSeverozapaden (Northwestern) – the country's parliamentary speaker, Tsetska Tsacheva, announced Saturday.

Tsacheva, who spoke in the Danube city of Vidin, vowed that measures will be taken towards supporting the business in the impoverished region, especially in the agriculture sector, and attracting more EU funds to it.

"We must use the resources the region possesses – the Danube river, the clean nature, the historical and cultural monuments, the Belogradchik rocks," Tsacheva declared. The Belogradchik Rocks  are a group of bizarrely shaped sandstone, limestone and conglomerate rock formations located on the western slopes of the Balkan Mountain.

Severozapaden has the lowest GDP per inhabitant in EU, Eurostat revealed recently. In 2008, GDP per inhabitant, expressed in terms of purchasing power standards2,for the region was barely 28% of the EU 27 to 343% of the average in Inner London in the United Kingdom
