According to preliminary data from the Census, carried out in Bulgaria in February, Plovdiv keeps its place as the second largest city in Bulgaria, beating the Black Sea capital Varna by nearly 19 000 residents.

625 836 have been counted in the Plovdiv Region by February 22, with another 76 000 predicted to have registered by the end of the Census, February 28, to reach a total of 701 836.

312 448 have been registered in the city itself a week before the Census' end. Data from the National Statistics Institute, NSI, from 2007, lists 345 128 Plovdiv residents, ranking it second after the capital Sofia.

By February 27, 329 973 have been registered in Varna. Data from the Citizens Registration and Administrative Services (GRAO) Directorate shows that by September, 2010, Varna had 358 000 residents – third after Sofia with over 1 246 000 and Plovdiv with 381 737 people.

The final results are expected in 10 days from Saturday.
