Bulgarian football legend Hristo Stoichkov will team up with Bulgarian EU Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva in order to fight hunger and promote humanitarian work.
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Georgieva met Tuesday with Stoichkov, who will be Goodwill Ambassador for the "Professional Football against Hunger" campaign, which is a project of the European Professional Football League, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO)
The three had a meeting before Stoichkov's upcoming trip to Burkina Faso, where he is going to visit schools and ECHO-funded projects, the Bulgarian News Agency reported.
The trip to the capital Ouagadougou is planned for mid-March and it also envisions a charity football match. Stichkov will head the delegation.
"I am very happy to be here with the top EU Commissioner. When I entered the EC headquarters, I realized she is on the eighth floor, and my squad number is eight. I accepted the offer as soon as it was proposed to me at an accidental meeting at the Sofia Airport. I never doubted whether I should accept or not," Stoichkov said.
Georgieva pointed out that the EC President is highly appreciating the contribution of people as successful as the footballer.
"Humanitarian aid works in this way – no one can change the world alone, but together we can do it," Georgieva said and added that Barroso expects the Goodwill Ambassadors to give hope to places that need it the most.
The EC President received a martenitsa on the occasion of a traditional Bulgarian holiday, marking the beginning of spring, and greeted back in Bulgarian, saying "Chestita Baba Marta" (Grandma March).
He also pointed out that football, just like humanitarian aid, is a team work.
