Bulgaria's former Interior Minister and current Member of the Parliament from the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), Rumen Petkov, has written an open letter to the American Ambassador to Sofia, James Warlick.
In the letter, Petkov, who is vowing to send it to the US State Department, demands answers to his questions to Warlick.
"From November 2010, until now, you insist that there is an ongoing criminal investigation against me, which is the reason to revoke my US visa. Bulgarian Chief Prosecutor, Boris Velchev, already firmly declared that I am not under any investigation whatsoever on Bulgaria territory," the former Minister writes.
Petkov insists on answers to the following questions:
What are the grounds, data and facts making the Ambassador disseminate information and serious accusations about the alleged probe and in which country this probe is being carried out?
Is it an American policy to support public figures who fail to declare income and is this possible for an American politician? (Petkov is referring to Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, who was subject to a tax probe over the purchase of several apartments in upscale Sofia neighborhoods in the last years.)
What is the Ambassador's persona stand on illegal drugs and has he been using them?
The BSP MP reiterates he wants clear answers, not words such as "I am not obligated to say," and "I cannot tell more."
Petkov writes he loves America and has many friends there with whom he continues to work.
"In those three months, the American Ambassador is touring Sofia's locales, surrounded by beautiful Bulgarian women; took part in TV series, but did not find time to tell Bulgarians why their former Interior Minister is investigated and in what country. I can no longer tolerate such insolence," the letter points out.
Petkov further told media he had been recently invited to take part in a TV program together with Warlick, but under the latter's pressure the invitation had been recalled.
"He blackmailed the TV over fear from my presence. After waiting for three months, I am obligated to my family, friends and comrades to demand these answers and want everyone to know this is a very bold lie and a cynical insinuation," the MP concludes.
